Post-doctoral position (12 mo) in nutritional metabolomics at INRA, France

The Human Nutrition Unit at INRA Clermont-Ferrand is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on the D-CogPLast project funded by the JPI Healthy Diet for Healthy Life. The project aims at identifying dietary modulators of cognitive ageing with a metabolomics discovery phase in humans then a validation of the findings in in vitro and animal models for brain plasticity, neuronal integrity and cognitive decline.

The post-doctoral fellow will use untargeted metabolomics based on high resolution mass spectrometry for a comprehensive exploration of nutritional exposure profiles in 200 individuals with accelerated cognitive decline over 13+ years against 200 individuals with preserved cognition (Three-city study). Particular attention will be given to metabolites of plant food bioactives (e.g. Mediterranean diet bioactives) in the metabolomic profiles. A set of dietary bioactives associated with slower cognitive decline will be further validated in 400 participants from a separate cohort. The post-doctoral fellow will be responsible for treatment and interpretation of metabolomics data. He (she) will use the most up-to-date tools and resources for the exploration of food-derived exposures using metabolomics, including those developed in our research unit (Phytohub, Workflow4metabolomics…). The post-doctoral fellow will interact closely with analysts and bioinformaticians of our metabolomic platform (member of the national infrastructure MetaboHub), and will benefit from the international scientific network of the Human Nutrition Unit around nutritional metabolomics and plant food bioactives (JPI HDHL FoodBAll project, COST Action POSITIVe, MetaboHub, NuGO, RFMF…).

Candidate profile

PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology or nutrition.

Preference will be given to highly motivated candidates with research experience in nutritional metabolomics, or in mass spectrometry analysis and structure elucidation of small molecules. Knowledge on plant food bioactives will be appreciated.

Gross salary: 2600 €/month

Possibility upon selection on scientific excellence criteria to get a mobility allowance (1300€/month) with a contract extension (Agreenskills program: www.agreenskills.eu).

This post offers unique opportunities to conduct world-leading research and educate medical students in biochemistry/nutrition at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level.

We seek to appoint a scientist with a research record in nutritional biochemistry, biomarkers of intake and biomarkers of cardiometabolic health (including metabolomic approaches and mass spectrometry expertise) to contribute and build on current research strengths in cardiovascular medicine and nutritional biochemistry at Norwich Medical School.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Biochemistry/Nutrition or a related science subject along with a growing or established national reputation in research in biomarkers, development of biomarker methodology and in writing research grants.

Post-doctoral position (18 mo) in nutritional metabolomics at INRA, France

 The Human Nutrition Unit at INRA Clermont-Ferrand is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on the FoodBAll project funded by the JPI Healthy Diet for Healthy Life DHL (http://foodmetabolome.org/). The project focuses on the systematic exploration and validation of nutritional biomarkers to obtain a good coverage of the food intake within Europe.

The position will focus on the identification of food-derived metabolites in animal studies  using mass-spectrometry based metabolomics, and on the development of new tools and resources for metabolomics applied to nutritional biomarkers discovery (FoodComEx, PhytoHub and in silico prediction tool for the metabolism of food bioactives).

The post-doctoral fellow will be involved in interpretation of metabolomics data and development of online resources from a biologist viewpoint and will interact closely with analysts and bioinformaticians of our metabolomic platform (member of the national infrastructure MetaboHub). A key benefit of the post-doctoral program is collaborating with a number of laboratories within the FoodBAll consortium (22 partners) and the COST Action POSITIVe (>70 universities and research institutes).

Candidate profile:

PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biology or nutrition and 0-5 years of relevant post-doctoral experience.

Preference will be given to highly motivated candidates with research experience in nutritional metabolomics, or pharmacokinetic/ADME studies in humans or animals, or in mass spectrometry analysis and structure elucidation of small molecules. Knowledge on plant food bioactives will be appreciated. Practical experience in mining online databases is required.

Interplay of ecology and evolution in the gut microbiota: A case study of polysaccharide-degrading Bacteroides

The human intestine harbors a rich microbial ecosystem with a tremendous number and density of microorganisms collectively referred to as the gut microbiota. These organisms perform important services such as breakdown of refractory dietary polysaccharides and production of vitamins. The gut microbiota of each person has a distinct composition that is relatively stable over time, but how the microbiota is assembled is not well understood. This project explores how the assembly and interactions of the gut microbiota are affected by rapid evolution of microbial populations due to competition for niche space. Co-evolution can occur on ecologically meaningful time scales, and the resulting adaptation can fine-tune populations to their environment and to other populations. The resulting community is thus shaped by the interplay of ecological and evolutionary processes, which can affect community-level properties such as ecosystem productivity, stability, and invasibility by other microbes (pathogens or commensals).

This idea and specific questions related to it will be addressed using an experimental evolution approach that explores a key process in the gut: polysaccharide degradation by members of the genus Bacteroides. Fundamental questions will be addressed about adaptation, diversification, and community assembly under controlled environments with well-defined niche spaces. Results from model systems will be complemented by study of real gut microbial communities with stable isotope probing. These studies will provide a picture of the interplay of ecological and evolutionary processes in the gut microbiota and refine our conceptual understanding of how microbial communities assemble.

Required and preferred qualifications. We are looking for highly motivated and independent scientists interested in microbial ecology and evolution. Applicants should have a strong background in gut microbiology, environmental microbiology, or microbial evolution. Experience in one or more of the following areas/techniques is advantageous: intestinal microbiology, cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms, genomics, bioinformatics, stable isotope probing, and isotope analytics. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
